Ciel Bleu et Petits Oiseaux is a noise label based in France. They release new cassettes on a regular basis and are passionate about the noise (anti-music) genre. The label owner, Mieczko Kampuchéa, kindly accepted to answer my questions. Here's the result.

PSJ: What got you into the noise anti-music genre?

I have a Black Metal background, which leads me to the spheres of the Dark Ambient scene. I’ve really started when I discovered the Nordvargr/Drakh project. Then the Nordvargr discography followed and most notably the immense “Hypergenome666” between Nordvargr, B.S.E and Kenji Siratori. I liked what Mr. Siratori did on this release, so I started to get all the Kenji Siratori releases I could find.

The final push came from Nordvargr again, when he made the tape “The Walls Are Closing In”, which was my first exposure to the Harsh Wall Noise genre. That tape had a VOMIR cover, so VOMIR came next. And here I am.

PSJ: What motivated you to start your own noise label?

Something egoist I suppose. Release material that I wanted to have, and release some of my personal work (but not too much, Ciel Bleu et Petits Oiseaux was not created just for the purpose of releasing all my work myself). I also wanted to make a label that would last, not another entity coming from nowhere that will vanish 3/4 years later.

PSJ: How artists get released on your label?

Most of the time I am the one who contact the artist. I’m always opened to submissions, but I often decline them due to lack of time (at the present time I already have around 10 releases scheduled, with too little time to work on them sadly). My life has changed a lot since I’ve started the label, and I think I’ll continue to decline most of the submissions because of this lack of time unfortunately.

PSJ:  Why the name "Ciel Bleu et Petits Oiseaux" (which is very cute) for a noise label?

It IS cute yeah! A lovely blue sky with cute little birds flying around. What could possibly be missing, if not the harshest noise on the background? A funny contrast. Same idea for the label logo. A lovely contrast.

PSJ: You've released many cassettes so far, and very few CDs. Why the focus on tape?

Because I love tapes, and because I don’t like CDr, as simple as that. I have some Floppy Disk planned as well, I love these old and unsuitable formats. I would not mind doing some Vinyl, Acetate or CD, but I don’t have the money to do it, nor the place to stocks 200/300+ copies of the release that nobody would care about.

PSJ: How is the noise scene in France?

On facebook, like everywhere else. But I’m not, so I can’t tell much about it. We still have the glorious VOMIR, which is a good thing. The Great Rotkappchen still stands above men, he truly is our lighthouse. And of course more recent projects such as Chibre, Fosse, S4TVR4Ti0N/III, or Shinjuku Ni-Chome are worthy to be named and everyone should check these projects.

PSJ: Do you make noise yourself? If so, under which pseudonym?

Yes, I’m behind the project Trou. It was I all along! Erm...
Anyway, Trou was created a few months before Ciel Bleu et Petits Oiseaux, and since then, I’ve release or been part of around 40 releases. Mostly tapes obviously, some Floppy Disk as well.
I have also played in Tournante, a tape was released by Ciel Bleu et Petits Oiseaux not so long ago. Great performance.

PSJ: You seem to be truly engaged in properly promoting your label. Where does the motivation for doing that comes from? Is it something you learned on your day job or from family?

I don’t know... I make some (basic) flyers and I have sent some tapes to reviewers, but that seems  normal to me. I think this is something that comes more from my metal background than my day job / family. However, I plan to reduce the amount of material I sent for reviews. I am a bit tired of those fuckers that don’t review your work and stop answering mails... Making these tapes cost money. Sending these tapes cost money. Thus, I request to have a review made in the end - being good/bad/neutral/boring I do not care – as a respect for the money involved.

But I will not promote at all cost. Today everyone is on facebook, a lot of people will not look elsewhere for info. Well, I prefer to avoid being there, and avoid these people.

PSJ: Ciel Bleu et Petits Oiseaux releases are not available in mp3 format, why?

Digital is for lazy people. I’m not lazy. As far as I’m concern, I don’t listen to digital only release, I consider that if it was release on digital only, it means that nobody put some energy to have it release properly, thus it’s not worthy of my time. Ciel Bleu et Petits Oiseaux releases ARE worthy of your time. Don’t be lazy, come get your love.
