Flying Street is the live recording of a show of improvised music that took place at the La Sala Rossa in Montreal and on which you can hear two musicians conversing each other through their respective instrument. Sam Shalabi, well known in the Montreal underground music scene for having his music released by prestigious labels such has Alien8 Recordings, plays his oud, a middle eastern stringed instrument (the ancestor of today's guitar) while Stefan Christoff answers to Shalabi with his piano. This musical conversation is the natural extension of a friendship that developed between the two artists. Like Muslimgauze, the duo imply politics in their music, being both into the grassroots arts and activist world for equity and justice. My guess would be that, like Muslimgauze, they are against the Palestine apartheid, but it's only a guess... That being said, the music is beautiful and flows naturally. You couldn't tell it's improvised, which is a sign that both musicians are talented and experienced. While not been the kind of music I usually listen to, I've found Flying Street to be an enjoyable listen. For an album made using only two instrument, it sounds good and it's never dull. As a bonus, the artwork is a beautiful silk screened arabesque motif, which looks stunning when you get the vinyl edition of this album.
